The earliest example of such products has been traced in Europe which is believed to be from eighteenth century. Even, some examples of the rag rug weaving, which are from eighteenth century, have been found in Japan. This indicates that the art of rag weaving was not confined to a particular geographical region.

There are many forms and arts of rag weaving famous in different part of the world. For instance, the particular kind of rag weaving popular in Norway and Sweden is known as “Ryer”. The specific art of rag weaving include pulling loops of wool through the background of a woven material to create a new type of fabric that resemble an animal skin. This art has been traced back in 1700 century. But, researchers have also found some traces of this art in Danish Bronze Age graves.

The words “rug” has come from “ryer” or “ryiis”. In good old days, the fabric made with ryer was used to protect small openings of the fishing boats. During the mid fifteenth century the use of the fabric widened as they replaced fur and skins as warm bed coverings. Till the early twentieth century there was a strong rag rug tradition as the rugs were essential part of dowry given to a girl during her marriage. There were specially dedicated ‘Rug Women’ who traveled different islands to make the rugs. Today, the fabric has a wide range of use and the materials are being manufactured in the factories. The best known use of the fabric is floor covering.
